French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing Coin Cabinet (circa 1680)
Rare and Elegant "Bird" Cabinet in Marquetry
The front opens with various doors and drawers richly adorned with intricate marquetry decorations of birds set in architecturally designed landscapes. The molded top opens with a lid, while the sides are decorated with large palatial scenes populated by animals and exotic birds. The interior of the doors contains hidden drawers. The desk base, in the Louis XVI style, consists of a rectangular desk veneered in fruitwood and blackened wood.
Work from the 17th century, originating from Alsace, Switzerland, or Augsburg in Germany, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. Restored around 1848 and most recently in 2024 to revive its original charm and patina.

Belgium. Brabant. Charles V (1506-1555), Gulden (Florin Karolus d'argent) (1544-1548) (Antwerp mint) (Silver, 21.72 gr, 37 mm). VGH 187-1. Extremely Fine.
Probably one of the best preserved example. A magnificent portrait of fine style struck in high relief and a finely detailed composition. Wonderful gray patina.
In the late 15th century, new silver mines in Tyrol and Saxony enabled the minting of large silver coins (Guldengroschen), later widely used in the Holy Roman Empire as Taler. Spain's New World silver influx only became significant after 1545-1546. Charles V introduced a large silver coin in the Netherlands in 1544, equivalent to a gold karolus florin, but it failed to gain public favor and was discontinued after a brief period.

Extremely rare issue, especially for Flanders. We encountered a couple of examples for Brabant and Hainaut, but none for Flanders. Much rarer than the already rare 2/3 Gold Lion. Despite the absence of a part, this example remains superb, boasting strong details.

Belgium. Pair of Tin Uniface The Peace Treaty between Spain and France 1660 (Tin, 70.95 gr, 55 mm). Van Loon 1660-6. PCGS SP62
The Treaty of the Pyrenees, signed on November 7, 1659, marked the end of a prolonged conflict between France and Spain that had been part of the broader Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). Although the Thirty Years' War officially ended with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, France and Spain continued fighting until this treaty brought their hostilities to a close.
Negotiated on Pheasant Island, a small neutral territory in the Bidasoa River between the two nations, the treaty symbolized a decisive shift in European power dynamics. It ceded Roussillon and northern Cerdanya to France, consolidating French control over parts of modern-day southern France, and parts of Artois, Hainaut, and other territories in the Low Countries. Spain retained control of the Southern Netherlands, but the loss of these territories significantly weakened its influence.
The treaty also included a marriage agreement between Louis XIV of France and Maria Theresa of Spain, aimed at cementing peace. However, the dowry disputes arising from this marriage later became one of the factors leading to the War of Devolution (1667-1668).
The Treaty of the Pyrenees is a critical moment in European history, as it signaled the decline of Spanish dominance and the rise of France as a major power under Cardinal Mazarin and Louis XIV, laying the groundwork for the later "Age of Absolutism."
