Lot 333
China - Empire Period, Kiau Chau. German Occupation. 10 Pfennig Token ND (ca. 1910) (Nickel-Plated Brass, 2.88 gr, 21.50 mm). PCGS AU55
No exact date is known for minting, however most speculate this was minted during the early 20th century. We know most likely it could not have been minted later than 1914 as the German Occupation ended in 1914.
Kiautschou, also known as Kiau Chau or Jiaozhou, was a territory in eastern China that was leased to Germany by the Qing Dynasty in 1898. The area included the city of Qingdao (formerly Tsingtao), which became a major German naval base and commercial center.
The German occupation of Kiautschou was marked by significant German investment in infrastructure, including the construction of a railway system and modern port facilities. The Germans also introduced modern sanitation practices and established a public health system.
However, the German occupation was not without controversy. The Chinese population of the region was largely marginalized and subjected to discriminatory policies, and the German presence was resented by many Chinese nationalists.
During World War I, Japan declared war on Germany and quickly seized control of Kiautschou in 1914, effectively ending the German occupation. After the war, the territory was returned to Chinese control, but Qingdao remained an important center of German culture in China, with many German-style buildings and businesses still present in the city today.
