France - François Quesnay (1694-1774) (early 1820s) (Bronze, 408.00 gr, 141 mm). Extremely Fine. François Quesnay (1694-1774) was a French economist and one of the key figures of the physiocratic school of thought in the 18th century. He is best known for his concept of the"Tableau économique"and his ideas about the importance of agriculture in the economy. Quesnay was originally trained as a physician and practiced as a surgeon at the court of Louis XV. However, he also developed an interest in economics and developed his own economic theory based on the idea that agriculture was the primary source of wealth for a nation. In his"Tableau économique,"Quesnay represented the economy as a circular flow diagram, where the income generated by agriculture circulated among different classes of society. According to Quesnay, agriculture was the only productive sector that created a surplus, whereas other sectors of the economy merely redistributed that surplus. The physiocrats, with Quesnay as their leader, advocated for economic freedom and the removal of barriers to agriculture, such as regulations and excessive taxes. They also advocated for tax reform in favor of a single land tax, known as the"royal tithe,"which was supposed to be fair and encourage investment in agriculture. Although Quesnay's ideas were not widely adopted during his lifetime, they had a significant influence on the subsequent development of economic thought. His works were rediscovered and appreciated by economists in the 19th century, and he is considered one of the forerunners of economic liberalism and modern economic science.
