Following Bolivia's independence, the Constituent Congress approved a law providing for a national currency on November 20, 1826. The Casa de Moneda de Potosí began minting the new currency in 1827. at the rate of 10 dineros 20 granos (24 granos = 1 dinero - 12 dineros = pure silver under the old colonial system). Equivalent to 902.7 thousandths of pure silver.
The inscriptions on the edge are a tribute to Antonio José de Sucre's victory at the Battle of Ayacucho in 1824, which secured the independence of the Spanish colonies in South America.
