Lot 413
Cocos (Keeling) Islands - Clunies-Ross V (1946-1978), Set of 7 coins, 5 Cents to 5 Rupees 1977. KM X 1 to X 7. Uncirculated.
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands, a remote Indian Ocean atoll, were ruled for over a century by the Scottish Clunies-Ross family, who established a private dynasty in 1827. Settling the uninhabited islands, John Clunies-Ross I created a feudal society centered on coconut plantations, bringing Malay workers and controlling all aspects of island life. By the mid-20th century, under John Cecil Clunies-Ross V, the family's rule came under scrutiny as modern governance took hold. In 1978, the Australian government purchased the islands, ending the family's hereditary control.
