No.3: 10 Guilder Gold Coin
The 10 Guilder Gold Coin, also known as the “10 Dutch Guilder”, was first minted in 1818. It was the official currency of the Netherlands from 1680 until the euro replaced it in 2002.
The Royal Dutch Mint minted two main series of 10 Dutch guilders coins. The first was featuring the portrait of King William III, the last king of the famous Orange-Nassau lineage. These coins were produced between 1875 and 1889. The second series depicts Queen Wilhelmina, who was the longest reigning monarch in the history of the Netherlands from 1890 to 1948. Queen Wilhelmina’s 10 Dutch guilder coins were minted from 1911 to 1917 and from 1925 to 1933.
It weighs about 6.72 grams, measures about 22 mm in diameter and contains 6.05 grams of pure gold.
Here, the obverse depicts Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands with a tiara. We can also see the inscription “God Zij Met Ons” which means “God is with us”. There are 5 different obverses for this coin, depending on the year of issue: King William III of the Netherlands and Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands at four different stages in her reign.
The reverse of the coin displays a crowned shield of the Netherlands with a crowned heraldic lion in its centre bearing a sword and arrows. The inscription “10 G” surrounds the lion. The words “Koningrijk Der Nederlanden” (Kingdom of the Netherlands) surround the crowned shield of the Netherlands. A caduceus and a seahorse surround both sides of the year of issue which is located below the shield.
