Although early adopters of Roman material culture, the Treveri had a chequered relationship with Roman power. Their leader Indutiomarus led them in revolt against Caesar during the Gallic Wars; later, they played a key role in the Gaul revolt during the 'Year of the Four Emperors'. On the other hand, they supplied the Roman army with some of its most famous cavalry.

The reverse (sun-eating monster) illustrates the Celts' astronomical conceptions of the sidereal phenomena that regularly punctuate the cosmos (the course of the sun) or cyclically interrupt it (eclipses); also a translation of the Gallic calendar system where, every thirtieth year, a moon was swallowed to reconcile the lunar and solar comput. Celestial phenomena were indeed the object of the greatest attention among the Gauls; Julius Caesar stated that the druids were engaged in numerous speculations about the stars and their movements (Bellum Gallicum 6.14).

The Veneti ('the kin', 'the friendly ones') were a Gallic tribe from Armorica. A seafaring people, they strongly influenced south-west Brittonic culture by their trade. After they were defeated by Brutus in a naval battle in 56 BC, their maritime commerce eventually declined under the Roman Empire.
