In Catholic imagery, Mary is sometimes portrayed in a sorrowful and lacrimating affect, with one or seven long knives or daggers piercing her heart (according to the Simeon's prophecy). The devotion to the Mary's Seven Sorrows in Flanders owed its origins and development to Jean de Coudenberghe. In 1492, he founded in Bruges a confraternity of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, later approved by Pope Alexander VI. It is to this confraternity, in a Book of Miracles (1510), that we owe the first representation of Our Lady with the seven daggers.

France. John the Good. 1350-1364. AV Florin (3.43g, 4h). Ciani 363; Friedberg 282. Lightly toned. NGC AU Details
The florin was the first European gold coin to achieve the status of an international currency after the disapearance of European gold coinage in the eighth century. Florence first issued the florin in 1252. This coin initially represented the wealth of Florence, which used the patron saint of the city (Saint John the Baptist) to also guarantee the quality of the metal. This later gave rise to a local saying: "Saint John will have no cheating".

Saint Mansuy, from Scotland, was the first bishop of Toul. This badge illustrates his most famous miracle: one feast day the governor's son fell from the top of the ramparts in the Moselle river. The pagan gods were invoked but in vain. Later, the governor had a dream... he saw Saint Mansuy who promised to resurrect his son if he converted to Christianity. The next day, Saint Mansuy knelt down in front of the river, the child's body began to float and he raised him from the dead.
