Struck to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Independence.
Flemish obverse muled with french reverse, mintage estimated at 30 pieces. Minted illegally, just over half was returned. With original box of issue.
The Ministry of Finance is organizing a design competition open to all Belgian artists for the creation of a type of coin issued on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Belgium's independence.
They had to provide in their drawings five free places to accommodate the effigy of the five kings of our dynasty. Wieslaw Bartolomiej Bielyszew's project won first prize. After some improvements to his project, it was engraved by Paul Huybrechts.
The following five effigies were chosen to be engraved in a medallion on the obverse: The effigy of Leopold I by Leopold Wiener, Leopold II by Franz Vermeylen, Albert I by Godefroid Devreese, Leopold III by Marcel Rau and Baudouin I by Harry Elstrom.

France. Directory (1795-1799), Napoleon Bonaparte, Italian Campaign 1796, Ferrier (Bronze, 33.40 gr, 42 mm). Hennin 766. Very Fine.
The Italian Campaign of 1796, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, was a pivotal moment in both his career and European history. At just 27 years old, Napoleon was entrusted with the command of the French Army of Italy during the French Revolutionary Wars, a time when France was embroiled in conflict with multiple European powers, including Austria and Sardinia.
Napoleon's bold strategy and military genius turned the campaign into a resounding success, despite the French forces being outnumbered and poorly equipped compared to their adversaries. His leadership was characterized by rapid maneuvering, audacious tactics, and the ability to inspire his troops. By winning key battles such as the Battle of Montenotte, the Battle of Lodi, and the Battle of Arcole, Napoleon was able to decisively defeat the Austrians and their allies, forcing them to retreat from northern Italy.
The campaign not only resulted in significant territorial gains for France, including the conquest of Lombardy and other parts of northern Italy, but it also helped to solidify Napoleon's reputation as one of the greatest military leaders in history. The Treaty of Campo Formio, signed in 1797, officially ended the conflict and secured French dominance in Italy, with Austria ceding several territories to France.
The Italian Campaign was a key moment in Napoleon's rise to power. It not only demonstrated his military prowess but also laid the foundation for his eventual ascension to the title of Emperor of France. The campaign's success enhanced his popularity and influence, marking the beginning of a new era in European history.

The Canal de Mons à Condé was a significant infrastructure project during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, designed to improve transportation and enhance military logistics. Spanning between Mons in present-day Belgium and Condé-sur-l'Escaut in northern France, the canal was part of Napoleon's broader efforts to modernize France and its empire, particularly its military capabilities.
The canal was envisioned as a way to link the Sambre and Escaut rivers, facilitating the movement of goods and troops between France and the regions of the Low Countries. Napoleon recognized the strategic importance of such waterways, both for economic development and for ensuring military mobility during the Napoleonic Wars. The canal would provide a reliable route for transporting supplies, troops, and artillery, essential for the movement of French forces across northern Europe.
Construction of the Canal de Mons à Condé began in 1804, but it was not completed until after Napoleon's fall from power. While the canal's completion did not fully match Napoleon's grand vision due to political and financial challenges, it remained an important regional transportation route throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Napoleon's push for projects like the Canal de Mons à Condé reflected his broader ambitions to improve France's infrastructure, strengthen its economy, and ensure military dominance. Though not as widely known as his military campaigns, the canal exemplified his strategic foresight in infrastructure development.
