The Veneti ('the kin', 'the friendly ones') were a Gallic tribe from Armorica. A seafaring people, they strongly influenced south-west Brittonic culture by their trade. After they were defeated by Brutus in a naval battle in 56 BC, their maritime commerce eventually declined under the Roman Empire.
