From a private collection Friend of Watteau, Anne Claude de Caylus (1692-1765) was a famous scholar, archaeologist, collector, antique dealer and engraver. A pioneer of archaeology as a science, he bequeathed his collection of antiques to the Cabinet des médailles in 1762.
