Lot 122

A Roman cornelian intaglio with a sculptor. 1st century BC. 13mm. From a private collection Although Romans loved to copy ancient Greek art, they held somewhat of a similar attitude toward artists as their Greek counterparts. Roman writers in fact commented that even great Greek sculptors like Phidias could not escape their disdain. In the latter part of the Roman Republic, we know that artists banded together to form collegia, which are similar to the guild system that existed in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
