A Roman cornelian intaglio with a portrait of Isis-Fortuna. 3rd century AD. 25mm. Formerly broken. From a private collection; former Arthur Forgeais (1822-1878) collection Isis-Fortuna was the goddess of fortune and the personification of luck in Roman religion. Often depicted with the Rota Fortunae (wheel of fortune), a gubernaculum (ship's rudder) or a cornucopia (horn of plenty), she represents life's capriciousness.
