Lot 299
Belgium, Leopold II (1865-1909), Silver essai 5 Francs 18(66), Wiener (Silver, 28.22 gr, 37 mm) Head left LEOPOLD II ROI DES BELGES Rev. Crowned arms on ornate shield divide denomination, wreath surrounds L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE. Plain edge. Dupriez 1003. Uncirculated.
Leopold Wiener will reuse the design of the reverse for the new coin of 5 Francs, which he had already used for the coins under the reign of Leopold I. The obverse shows the head of Leopold II with a small beard. The 5 Francs coins were still struck with French legends and were minted until 1876.
Very rare, and attractive piece.
