Nelson's decisive victory against the French fleet at Aboukir Bay near Alexandria (Egypt), gave Britain command of the Mediterranean and cut Napoleon Bonaparte's army in Egypt off from France. He made Alexander Davison his prize agent, and Davison had these medals struck for British participants in the battle. Nelson was created Baron Nelson of the Nile as a result of the victory.
